 Hey guys, it's Spec. I decided to take this slot from Jacob because I actually have something to say about ADHD for a change. I feel many people struggle with their mental health not only those with ADHD. But, it seems that people with ADHD struggle more frequently, and to a greater degree.

My Personal Journey

For much of my life, I have struggled with my mental health, no matter how much therapy, medication, counselling, or self-care I do I always end up back at the same spot. It seems that every time I get to the point where I'm in a good place something happens that throws me off. I have put a lot of thought into this over the years and have to say, it seems that we people with ADHD are not only more prone to mental health episodes but our capacity to deal with stressors, events in our lives, downturns in fortune are significantly impacted by our condition. I know that personally, I feel it is much easier for me to get worked up over small things compared to other people. 

No matter what happens, good or bad I seem to get easily overwhelmed and frustrated. For example, I have recently been learning to crochet, and although it is going well I feel as if I'm not good enough and that I should be doing better. It is this self-defeating mindset that is common in those with ADHD. We are often perfectionists who don't tolerate failure of any kind well. 

My Past Journeys

I have written about my journeys with both anxiety and depression in the past and you can see those posts here and here. But to summarise it is, it has been an ongoing issue for me that started in my early teens and for the most part, has seemed to have got worse over the years rather than better. Medication helps but I feel like a failure for needing to rely on meds just to function like a normal person. 



So what can we do to help ourselves? I guess a big thing that I and many people like myself need to do is to take a step back and appreciate just what we do have. I think it is easy to see the negatives but very difficult to take note of all the small positive effects we have on the world without even thinking. Also, it is important to take time for ourselves, doing things we enjoy simply because we enjoy them without thinking about if we are good, bad or anything else. I personally enjoy cooking but I find myself not doing it more than I'd like due to my mental health and that's something I'm wanting to change moving forward.
